NEWS FROM JAPAN

Misfits Records would like to update fiends everywhere regarding the safety and welfare of the members of Balzac, and their families, in the wake of the terrible events unfolding in Japan.

We’re happy to report that thankfully, the entire band, Hirosuke, Atsushi, Akio, and Takayuki, as well as their families and friends, are safe and unharmed. Balzac extends great thanks to everyone who is thinking of them.

A message from Hirosuke:

“This time, in the East, especially in the Tohoku area, it has become a massive disaster. Tokyo has also become quite chaotic. When something like this affects Tokyo, it has great effect on all of Japan. At the moment, the Fukushima Nuclear Reactor has become a very large worry.

Even though we are living in the West of the country, many of us are also affected by the disaster. It will take time to overcome everything that has happened, but all Japanese citizens are working hard and cooperating to reconstruct Japan.”

FREE BALZAC TRACK "HURT" (FROM THE BIRTH OF HATRED) ON RUE MORGUE'S FREE DOWNLOADABLE COMPILATION ALBUM, HYMNS FROM THE HOUSE OF HORROR!

AVAILABLE ONLINE MAY 1st

In honor of Rue Morgue’s 100th issue, the magazine is releasing a free, downloadable compilation album titled Rue Morgue Radio Presents…Hymns from the House of Horror! Thousands of bands have graced the pages of Rue Morgue magazine and airwaves of Rue Morgue Radio over the course of thirteen years, more than 300 radio shows and 100 magazines. Some of the many artists that encapsulate the world of Rue Morgue are included on this FREE morbid mixtape, hosted by Rue Morgue Radio’s Tomb Dragomir.

A four-page feature article about the compilation will be included in the expanded 100th issue of Rue Morgue on newsstands in May. The article spotlights each artist and the song they contributed, exploring the origins of each track's conception. "Hurt" from "The Birth of Hatred" is included and Balzac front-man Hirosuke told Rue Morgue:

"The song 'Hurt' takes heavy influence from Hitchcock’s Psycho. Fusing the creepy atmosphere of the film with our horror rock sound, the end result is an energetic, dark pop number." - Hirosuke Nishiyama

Listeners can check out the bands, link to their websites and download Hymns from the House of Horror, complete with printable album artwork designed by RM’s Justin Erickson.

This FREE downloadable album will be available starting May 1st at: rue-morgue.com and ruemorgueradio.com.

MISFITS COFFIN BOX SET GOES GOLD:
EXCLUSIVE GOLD PLAQUE AVAILABLE TO FIEND CLUB MEMBERS ONLY!

The Misfits coffin box set is the first gold release in the band’s legendary career. The comprehensive collection of vintage material including nearly every recording from the Misfits first single, (1977’s “Cough Cool”), through 1983’s groundbreaking “Earth AD” album, is something no Fiend should be without, and it shows… Having sold over half a million discs in the US alone, the Misfits box set from Caroline Records is now officially certified gold by the RIAA marking the first gold release from the legendary Misfits! Congratulations go out to all involved and a special thanks to you, the fiends, for making it happen.

To commemorate the historic event, Jerry Only has personally designed and overseen construction of a unique coffin shaped RIAA certified gold plaque for the box set, standing 2 & ½ feet tall! Making it even more special, he’s designed this plaque exclusively for Official Fiend Club members. “I wouldn’t have it any other way…” stated Only.

As a token of appreciation for the undying loyalty and support of the fiends, Jerry intends to extend this option to Official Fiend Club members exclusively. If you’re looking for the ultimate high-end Misfits collectible for your crypt, look no further. This is it, made for you and you alone, (literally).

At the moment only three hand made prototypes exist. Each unique to the other, made direct from the founding fiend’s blueprints and specs, with production overseen by Jerry Only personally. Not only will Official Fiend Club members have the exclusive opportunity to get one, but Fiend Club members even have the final say on which of the three prototypes will make it through to production!

If you’re a Fiend Club member, head over to the Official Misfits Fiend Club website to check out the three prototypes in detail, along with blueprints penned by Jerry himself. Only Fiend Club members can vote and when the vote is in, only Fiend Club members will have the ability to order. These special plaques will be custom made to order, in a limited edition, individually approved and signed by Jerry Only, and each personally engraved in your own name. Pricing is still to be determined but as these are individually hand made, it’s anticipated the final plaques will be priced in approximate proportion with the average electric guitar manufactured in the US. Don't miss this very rare and very limited opportunity to add an official RIAA certified gold Misfits box set coffin shaped plaque to your collection!

FIEND CLUB MEMBERS: VOTE NOW!

OSAKA POPSTAR FRONTMAN JOHN CAFIERO GUESTS ON IRWINO CHUSID'S SHOW ON WFMU MAY 31st

"Thirty years of punk rock history layered with Japanese anime frosted with the mainstreaming of outsider music = the headbanging genius of Osaka Popstar. No one else should follow this formula because it can't be done better, or louder, or with more panache."
- Irwin Chusid (WFMU DJ; author, Songs in the Key of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music)

WFMU’s Irwin Chusid presents “genre-surfing tokenism” from 12 - 2 pm…what’s that you ask? Probably one of the coolest, most unusual experiences in radio where there are no boundaries, outsiders are insiders and insiders are…well…confused!

On May 31st John mixed it up live in the studio with Irwin from 1 – 2pm EST. In an interesting twist, Irwin’s gave John free reign for the hour to pick a special blend of punk and outsider tunes he’d like to share with WFMU’s listeners. In between that, Irwin and John discussed Osaka Popstar in detail and played cuts off the new album. The show aired live on Wednesday, May 31st on 91.1 FM (NJ and NYC metro area) and 90.1 FM (Hudson Valley region).

You can hear the entire show (exactly as it aired live) online at WFMU.org. Click here for the full playlist and the entire show archived in your choice of streaming MP3 or RealAudio. Check the playlist and note that John begins midway into the show (at the 1pm hour).

John is a longtime WFMU listener and admits to being musically schooled by WFMU's free-form offerings. In addition to being a WFMU Radio personality, Irwin Chusid is a respected Author, Producer, Music Historian and journalist having written for The New York Times, Mojo, New York Press, and many other publications.

The unsuspecting DJ (who’s book “Songs in the Key of Z” includes profiles of outsider artists Daniel Johnston & The Kids of Widney High) received an advance copy the new Osaka Popstar CD a week before the release with no explanation whatsoever.

Irwin informs: “Had no idea why the OP CD was sent to me. I get a lot of crap dropped into the mailbox, and when I first saw the sleeve, assumed it was a mistake. I gave it a listen at home while fixing dinner, and without realizing the first song was Daniel's, found myself mesmerized by the recording. Song after song, it just got better. I was a fan by the time "Man of Constant Sorrow" ended.”

Later that week, Irwin debuted 4 tracks from the Osaka Popstar CD on his radio show: “I rarely play an artist more than once in a program, but sometimes I make exceptions... in exceptional cases.”

Click Here to listen to the archive of Irwin’s May 17th show which includes the original Kids of Widney High version of the song “Insects” back to back with the Osaka Popstar’s cover version plus 3 more OP tracks, Irwin’s comments on the new OP CD he’d just discovered and many rare gems you’d likely never hear anywhere else. You can learn more about Irwin Chusid and his projects via his webpage at WFMU and his Outsider Music website KeyofZ.com.

Click here for the online archive of Irwin’s May 31st show with live in studio guest; John Cafiero appearing for an interview and programming the music midway into the show.

Urban skateboarding just got more extreme! From extreme sport to extreme art! Decked Out at The Showroom NYC gallery in the East Village will showcase more than 100 custom longboards by contemporary artists. Curator Junko Matsuno has assembled DECKED OUT bringing together the work of animators, illustrators, painters, graphic designers, sculptors, musicians, toy designers and graffiti artists, all hitting these decks in free style mode and using the mediums that they want to use. No restrictions, no guidelines, all expressing their art with no rules.

We’ve jumped on board (literally) by rendering the Osaka Popstar Devil Dog Stripes design onto a special custom 1 of 1 silk-screened skate deck! With the kind assistance of the team at Select Distribution (formerly Vision) the custom deck was created using screens made specifically for this Showroom NYC art project. This 1 of 1 deck is the first and sole piece to be screened and done so with great care and manual attention to detail. As a result, the colors and imagery are extremely rich, crisp and vibrant.

The custom deck will be personally autographed by the entire lineup of "Osaka Popstar & the American Legends of Punk”:

John Cafiero (Osaka Popstar)
Marky Ramone (Ramones)
Jerry Only (Misfits)
Dez Cadena (Black Flag)
Ivan Julian (Richard Hell and the Voidoids)

Not only was this 1 of 1 created specifically for this art show, but it is also the VERY FIRST Osaka Popstar skate deck ever made…period! Signed personally by all the band members and suitable for hanging and displaying on your wall.

The Decked Out exhibition runs from June 2nd – 15th at the Showroom Gallery located at 117 Second Avenue, 2nd Floor. This as well as many other incredible one of a kind pieces by a variety of fantasic artists will all be displayed and available for sale so check it out.

Specifically in the case of Osaka Popstar, all artists proceeds for the sale of this unique 1 of 1 deck will be donated to the Make A Wish foundation, a fantastic and highly admirable children’s charity.

Visit the exhibition from June 2nd – 15th for a chance to own this one of a kind piece of pop-culture history!

For a sneak peek at the deck CLICK HERE but note the image does not best represent the vibrancy of the colors of the actual piece. Also note a glare exists as the deck's been shrink wrapped to protect it until the entire band signs the deck on Tues. at the Virgin Megastore in NYC. The band will sign the deck in the areas to the left and right of the logo (over the blue and white stripes).

LIMITED EDITION MISFITS VINYL 45 AVAILABLE ONLY WITH
PROOF OF PURCHASE SEALS!

3.16.06

The 45 will be appropriately titled “Psycho in the Wax Museum”!

2 rare, never before released tracks will be archived on clear vinyl and come with a picture sleeve with all-new art rendered by Butch Lukic!

With the coming of the debut CD from Osaka Popstar, loyal fiends who’ve shown their support to the label and our roster of artists will be rewarded with a very special and exclusive offer! Those who purchased our previous releases, “Misfits Project 1950” and “Balzac: Beyond the Darkness” were advised to save your proof of purchase seals. The third and final proof of purchase can be found inside the Osaka Popstar CD available worldwide on May 23rd. Redeem all 3 P.O.P. seals together and you'll receive a collectible vinyl Misfits 45 that will NOT be available anywhere else … period!

No - it will not be sold separately and neither will the recordings it contains! This is something special just for you fiends who support what we’re doing here at Misfits Records. As our personal thanks to you, this 45 will be exclusive only to those who redeem all 3 original proof of purchase seals.

All right, sounds cool you say, but what will be on this 45? Live stuff…no. New demos….no. Stuff from the upcoming album…no. Unreleased tracks from Misfits Project 1950…nope. Well, WHAT THEN!

How about 2 never before released Misfits songs from a decade ago? Yes fiends, JUST FOR YOU we’ve unearthed 2 never before released and never before completed, Misfits tracks predating the American Psycho album! “Angel Baby” (Click here for a Real Player clip) and “Death of the Fallen Angel” (written by founding member Jerry Only) were properly recorded by the Misfits in their entirety prior to the release of American Psycho, however the vocal tracks were never recorded. For that reason, the tracks we’re shelved and left in the vaults, seemingly never to be heard. That was then and this is now, we’re not looking to change the past or rewrite history but why leave these great songs in purgatory? With that said, the rough mixes in their original instrumental form, untouched and exactly as they were left a decade ago will be preserved on this vinyl 45 time capsule for your sole enjoyment. The ONLY way to get it is to redeem all 3 proof of purchase seals! Details on how to redeem the proof of purchase seals are coming in May with the release of “Osaka Popstar and the American Legends of Punk”…stay tuned!

Please note that the Misfits Project 1950 CD proof of purchase is the sticker (found on the outside of the shrink wrap of the CD case), which says "save this as proof of purchase". That proof of purchase sticker has always been on the Project 1950 CD and it is still available on the CD that you find in stores today. You must have that sticker, there will be no exceptions.

The Balzac Beyond the Darkness CD proof of purchase was also a sticker (found on the outside of the shrink-wrap of the CD case. It too says "save this as proof of purchase". We are aware that this Balzac CD has been issued in some instances without the sticker on the shrink-wrap. Due to that, to give everyone a fair chance, ONLY in the case of the Balzac Beyond the Darkness CD you will be allowed to send in EITHER the sticker from the shrink-wrap that says "proof of purchase" OR you can cut out the original UPC bar code from the back cover of the CD and use that as your proof of purchase. That Balzac proof of purchase will be the ONLY exception.

For Misfits Project 1950 you must have the “proof of purchase” sticker and for Osaka Popstar you must have the proof of purchase seal found inside the CD. Every Osaka Popstar CD found in stores will have a proof of purchase inside.

Details on how to redeem the proof of purchase seals are coming soon with the release of “Osaka Popstar and the American Legends of Punk”…stay tuned!

BRAND NEW MISFITS STUDIO ALBUM IN THE WORKS!
3.16.06

As previously reported at  misfits.com, the Misfits are currently at work writing an all-new studio album! Yes fiends, the band plans to return to the studio in 2007 to deliver the hardest, most aggressive Misfits material to see the pressing plant since Earth AD! Since the record is still in the writing stages, an exact release date is far too early to determine at this time. Jerry Only informs: “Our next album will follow our 30th anniversary and that album will only reinforce how potent the band has become with time.”

As many fiends may already be aware, the Misfits 30th Anniversary will strike on April 18, 2007…

There’s also been talk about the possibility of some live Misfits material (as recorded at some of the highly acclaimed shows Jerry, Dez and Robo delivered on recent tours), hitting the streets on disc via Misfits Records sometime in 2007.

The web store features four unique brands, "Shocker", "Dementia 13", "Culture", and "Balzac" band merchandise. The shop makes it possible for customers all over the world to make purchases. The band originally opened two retail stores in Japan, "Shocker" in Osaka, and "Coffin" in Kyoto, in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Since the birth of those stores, the band has received an unending stream of requests to make their brand merchandise available for purchase outside of Japan, which is why they’ve decided to make it all happen. Besides all of the popular fashions available through the web store, there are also many special, and limited, items that have been created specifically for overseas sale and are not available anywhere in Japan. With only a few exceptions, customers can easily make purchases at Shocker World Wide from nearly any country in the world. So if you crave more Balzac, visit Shocker World Wide online now and stay tuned for an all-new Balzac CD/DVD combo coming soon from Misfits Records.
